(GLAD TALK)
On
“COVID-19, Virtual Hearings and Automated Decision-Making”
SUNDAY, 4 OCTOBER 2020 AT 11:00 AM IST & 03:30 PM (Australian EST)
Bio of The Honourable Michael Kirby: Mr. Kirby was a Justice of the High Court of Australia, the nation’s highest court from 1996-2009. Previously, he was President of the Court of Appeal of New South Wales and also of Solomon Islands. Between 1975-84 he was inaugural Chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission. He has had many links with India.
About Hon’ble Mr. Kirby’s GLAD TALK: In this GLAD Talk, the speaker will explain the impact of COVID-19 on legal practice, especially in Australia. Courts in every jurisdiction have adjusted their procedures to permit many legal proceedings by video links. These procedures will be explained. They have parallels in India and around the world. Professor Richard Susskind OBE (Oxford University) has suggested that the rapid adaptation by lawyers in common law countries to virtual hearings will leave a long-term impact on legal practice. It may result in automated decision-making, a proposal being experimented in China. Can using algorithms be used to adapt court process? Or would this undermine individualised human justice that is a feature of our legal system. The speaker will explore the needs and prospects of radical change.
